Giving an Underused Lens a Chance: The 16mm f/2.8

Every photographer has that one lens sitting on the shelf that seems perfect on paper but somehow never makes it into regular use. For me, that's my 16mm f/2.8 prime.

If you look at the specifications alone, it ticks every box. It's compact, ultra-wide, lightweight, and ideal for landscapes, car photography, architecture, and those close-up pet portraits that really exaggerate perspective in a fun way.

For my treat-throwing photo sessions with dogs, I normally reach for a wide-angle zoom lens. It does a fantastic job, but after a long shoot, the weight can definitely start to make itself known. With that in mind, I decided it was finally time to give the much lighter 16mm prime a proper outing and see how it performed in a real-world pet photography session.

The lens certainly changes the look compared to my usual setup. The wider perspective creates a strong sense of depth and can make the viewer feel much closer to the action, especially when photographing dogs running towards the camera or interacting closely with their surroundings.

Here are a selection of images from the session, and I'd love to hear what you think. Does the ultra-wide perspective add to the photos, or do you prefer a more traditional look? Let me know your thoughts on the images and whether you think this little 16mm lens deserves a more permanent place in my camera bag.
